THE 10 STRANGEST THINGS EVER INSURED

THE 10 STRANGEST THINGS EVER INSURED

Sure, we’ve all insured our cars and our homes. Some of us may have even insured our lives or those of our pets. For most us that’s where it ends.

But, believe it or not, there are people in this world, however, who have other very important–*ahem*– items they feel they need to financially protect.  You know… just in case…

1. It all started in the 1930’s when Bette Davis had her waistline insured for $28,000. The details of the deal ensured that the wartime Hollywood star would be compensated if she expanded to any size beyond corset-safe. Money back for gaining weight?!  Bust out the ice cream, ladies!  The idea of insuring her tummy was so inspiring, in fact, that it seems as if Miss Davis had started a trend.  In the 1940’s, famous Hollywood actress Betty Grable had her legs insured by 20th Century Fox for a million bucks per gam.  Since then, dozens of celebrities have insured all kinds of different body parts.  Other celebrities who insured their legs include Fred Astaire, Angie Dickinson, and Heidi Klum.

2. In 1957, world-famous food critic Egon Ronay wrote and published the first edition of the Egon Ronay’s Guide to British Eateries.  Seeing as how his endorsement could make or break a restaurant, Ronay insured his taste buds by Lloyd’s of London for $400,000.

3. 73-year-old singer, Tom Jones, has reportedly insured his own chest hair for somewhere around $7 million.

Hey, it’s not unusual… it’s extremely unusual.

4. From 1967 to 1992, British comedian and singer Ken Dodd was in the Guinness Book of Records for the world’s longest joke-telling session–1,500 jokes in three and a half hours. Dodd is also famous for his frizzy hair, his ever-present feather duster, and his enormous buckteeth. In fact, those gigantic teeth are so important to his act that he insured them for $7.4 million. Bet that put a big smile on the face of his insurance agent!

5. At the height of his career, Michael Flatley–star of Riverdance and Lord of the Dance–insured his legs for a whopping $47 million! Before he became famous for the way his legs flail about as if independent from his body, the Chicago native trained as a boxer and won the Golden Gloves Championship in 1975.  Wouldn’t you think he’d be much better at kickboxing??

*Shrug*… Moving on…

6. While playing on Australia’s national cricket team from 1985 to 1994, Merv Hughes took out an estimated $370,000 policy on his trademark walrus mustache, which, combined with his 6’4″ physique and outstanding playing ability, made him one of the most recognized cricketers in the world.

7. Singer Bruce Springsteen had his voice insured by Lloyd’s of London for nearly $6 million. That’s nothing. Adam Lambert recently had his voice insured for $48 million. Yikes.  If only Adele had thought of that…

8. Representing the Cheerio Yo-Yo Company of Canada, 13-year-old Harvey Lowe won the 1932 World Yo-Yo championships in London and toured Europe from 1932-1935. He even taught Edward VIII, the Prince of Wales, how to yo-yo. Lowe was so valuable to Cheerio that the company insured his hands for $150,000.

9. Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards has had the middle finger of his left hand insured for $1.6 million.

*Stare*…

10. Whiskey company Cutty Sark was offering a $1.5 million prize for capturing the mythical Scottish lake inhabitant, the Loch Ness Monster, alive. Then they took out home insurance against paying the prize, in case someone actually captured the creature alive.

If you had to pick one part of your body to insure, what would it be? Why?
